Slow and Steady Wins the Race

These days the stiff competition in the field of management is not hidden from anybody. Today, each and every student, no matter from which field, wants to pursue MBA as post graduation. The case is same even for the engineering students. While a decade ago, the fields of engineering and MBA were considered poles apart, today, most of the engineering students have started pursuing MBA after completing graduation. This inclination of engineering students towards MBA has raised a debate that ‘Are engineering students wasting their time in management studies?’

Different people have different perceptions over this. According to a present engineering student and aspiring management student, “There is no hard and fast rule that engineering students must opt only for M-Tech or MS. After completing engineering if a person’s interest lies in management studies why can’t he/she opt for the same? One having both technical n managerial skills can handle an organisation efficiently without depending much on others. They can understand and tackle both technical and managerial problems efficiently.”

However, according to another student, Karandeep, “Eighty percent of the candidates who get admission in the best B-schools are engineers. And more than seventy percent placements B-schools provide are in banking, financial and consulting companies. So I think it’s of no use. You have spent about 3 years studying engineering and now after MBA, you want to work in financial sector, just because it will boost up your salary, then I think that the 3 years was just a waste of time.”

These days, more and more engineering graduates are taking up postgraduate studies in management because of a perception that one can more easily get a job if one has a management degree in addition to an engineering degree and that there are more possibilities in getting higher paying jobs in the field of management. The reason of the inclination of engineering students towards MBA might also be that engineering teachers do not make the engineering studies sufficiently exciting and the engineering students do not get aware of the excitement which is there in the careers of engineering and that careers in engineering can also be monetarily very rewarding and satisfying.

However, inspite of all this we cannot ignore the fact that these days most of the engineering students go for management studies and also that every field requires management whether it is running a hospital or running an industry. Engineers are the ones who is going to invent new ways to do process or new technology. If they have studied management they would be in better position to utilize the technology or new process.

Therefore, engineering students do not waste their time in management studies. They do it as it is the requirement of today’s market.

  1. Dear admin your statements are acceptable that most of the engineering students prefer MBA after graduation but the reason, as per I believe is the trend or you can assume as a craze of MBA among teenagers is very much higher then other master degree courses.
